शिवलिंग का अर्थ है शिव का आदि-अनादी स्वरूप. शिवलिंग साकार और निराकार ईश्वर का 'प्रतीक' मात्र है. भोलेनाथ ही समस्त जगत के मूल कारण माने गए हैं. इसलिए शिव मूर्ति और लिंग दोनों रूपों में पूजे जाते हैं. केवल शिव ही निराकार लिंग के रूप में पूजे जाते हैं.
