बंटवारे की स्याही सूखने से भी पहले पाकिस्तान ने इस सपने को पूरा करने की पहली कोशिश की थी. 22 अक्टूबर 1947 को पाकिस्तान के भेजे कत्लोगारत मचाते हुए कश्मीर के बारामुला में दाखिल हो गए. वतन परस्ती के जोश से लबरेज बारामुला के आम लोग कबायलियों से दो-दो हाथ करने कूद पड़े. घाटी में 'हमलावर होशियार, हम कश्मीरी हैं तैयार' का नारा गूंज उठा.

By the time of the country's independence, India was divided into more than five and a half hundred small and big princely states. Under the India Independence Act, the rulers of these princely states had to decide whether they wanted to go with India or with Pakistan or remain independent. In such a situation, 560 princely states decided to merge with India. But Junagadh, Jammu and Kashmir and Hyderabad decided not to go with either of them.
